Former LPGA star Alcott to boost Goodwill

Amy Alcott was inducted into the World Golf and LPGA Halls of Fame in 1999.

LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famer Amy Alcott is coming to Bermuda in December to help host this year's Goodwill Tournament.

The five-time major winner, who racked up 33 professional tour wins during her career, has signed up for the event after spending two years 'brainstorming' with organiser Alex Maderios about ways to increase the tournament's profile.

Female teams made an appearance for the first time at last year's event, and with another former LPGA professional, Susan Bond, bringing two all-female teams this year, the hope is that eventually there will be a separate women's flight in the competition.

"I am so happy to see all the efforts to grow and enhance the Bermuda Goodwill tournament have come to fruition," said Alcott.

"Alex Madeiros and I have brainstormed over the past two years and what is planned for all the amateur teams and guests I know will be a lot of fun, and with Bermuda as the backdrop, what could be better. I am looking forward to it and the first tournament ball being hit."

After a difficult 2009, Madeiros is expecting the 2010 tournament to prove to be an exciting one.

"Over the past 10 years we have been working extremely hard to maintain a special relationship with all of our friends who support the Bermuda Goodwill by participating in the event and that is what the Goodwill is all about," said Madeiros.

"Last year, despite the economy, we introduced the first ever all-female Goodwill tournament.

"This new division of the Goodwill is very similar to that of the Men's division. However, teams must consist of a female professional and three female amateurs.

"Amy, as our host, helps push this event to a whole new level and we believe her involvement will serve to grow interest and therefore additional teams," said Madeiros.

"Amy Alcott and I have been collaborating on various opportunities for the past two years and I am extremely pleased that a break in her schedule permits her to be a part of this very special event.

"I must also give credit to LPGA Professional, Susan Bond out of New England who has helped structure the Ladies Goodwill format. Susan herself will be bringing along two all-female teams to this year's event."

n Scott Roy continued his dominance of the Jack Daniels Tour, winning Monday's event at the Fairmont Southampton.

Roy shot a 56 to finish two shots ahead of early pacesetters Paul Adams and Derriek Douglas who faded towards the end.

Brian Morris made a late charge for first place with several birdies at the turn, but Roy held on.
