Island to host corporate games event in 2012
The Island could take in $2.5 million next year as the host of the 2012 inaugural Bermuda Corporate Games. The October 25 to 28 event will combine business, sports and tourism to bring together international and local participants.“This is very good news for our retailers, our restaurants and our hoteliers,” said Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert, who called the games “an innovative and unique event that has the feel-good potential of engaging all spheres of our community”.Sports Minister Glenn Blakeney anticipated the games to be one of the largest corporate-driven community events to come to the Island, to be hosted by the Island’s top sporting venues.“I fully support any initiatives that serve to put Bermuda on the map, particularly as Bermuda will be hosting the Carifta Games in April, 2012,” he said. There will be no restriction on age or qualifying standards, Mr Blakeney said, but athletes will compete for medals and corporate awards.Local sports clubs and the community will also be eligible for entry, and teams may include employees, colleagues, family and friends. For more information go to www.corporate-games.com
