Busy weekend on the local arts scene

Juggler Gabriel Gagnon will be featured at City Hall Theatre this evening until March 22.

Tonight the Bermuda Society of Arts is hosting a Meet the Artist event where Kathy Harriott will be on hand to help interpret her art installations, 'Till Death Do Us Part' and 'The Ties That Bind', a thought provoking exhibit Admission is free and it takes place from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Specialised Youth Arts Charity in association with Bermuda Magic is presenting the 9th Annual Magic Fest 2009 at City Hall Theatre from tonight until March 22. The event features Quebec's Master Magician Patrice Meunier, 20-year veteran magician Mario Choiniere, who won the Golden Magic Wand prize at the Canadian Magic Championship 2000, Gabriel Gagnon, host and magician Mike Bishop and several youngsters from around the Island. Show times are Friday 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is $25.

Tickets are available from Shannon's Boutique, Windsor Place, Queen Street and www.bdatix.bm.

A new exhibit featuring organic materials in art opened at The Elliot Gallery last night. "Artful Organics: A Montage" features five local artists Ronnie Chameau, known for her Banana Dolls and Angel Ornaments; Fibre Artist Gale Bellew showing Hairlock Paintings, which she created and trademarked; Bermudian Bob Patterson, a well known cabinet maker showing his miniature furniture and seedpod jewellery; Ronnie Lopes with his outdoor "Stick" made Furniture; and Gail Graham who tats silk into lace.

The public is invited to come to the Elliot Gallery tomorrow between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when some of the artists will be demonstrating and discussing their art forms. The Gallery is also open to the public and is free to enter from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The show is on until March 28. For more information ring 236-5963 or email elliot@kaf.bm.

Figure Drawing workshops at the Bermuda National Gallery are being led by artist Emma Ingham-Dounouk tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The workshops are open to all artistic levels and these adult drawing classes are led by a qualified teaching artist and includes all art materials, art criticism and a light lunch. It costs $70 per session for members and $80 per session for non-members.

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is inviting the public to view the '32N/64W' A Revelation: Bermuda's Black Artistic Legacy' in the Butterfield Family Gallery. The show is on until May 29 and the Gallery is open everyday except Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Phone 236-2950 for more information.

The Railway Children is on at the Daylesford Theatre until March 28. Tickets are $35 and are available at www.boxoffice.bm or at the Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society one hour before showtime. Curtain rises at 7.30 p.m.

Hasty Pudding Theatricals HPT 161 or "HPT 161: Acropolis Now" opens at the City Hall Theatre on March 26. The description of the this year's offering is as follows: "In a tiny town in Ancient Greece, an (olive) oil crisis has driven the economy to a standstill. Can nebbishy demigod Hugh Bris pull the town out of its slump? Will town accountant Roseanne Columns find true love or at least a reliable value for Pi? Will frat boy Brometheus keep living the greek life? Or will the schemes of sterile god Hades Pantsaretight ruin everything? Discover why it's not easy being Greek!"

Showtime is at 8 p.m. each night until March 28. Tickets are $25 and are available from www.boxoffice.bm.

Singing For Success: The Biggest Baddest Vocal Competition is back and this year it will feature former American Idol Fantasia Barrino. Come out and support our youngsters on March 29 at the Fairmont Southampton, as they compete for a Part Scholarship to Berklee College of Music.

Tickets are $75, $85 and at the door $95. They are also available on www.boxoffice.bm.
