Battling local trio bow out of contest

Local trio Blythe Walker, Peter Miller and Lance Fraser all bowed out of the Argo Group Gold Cup yesterday.Walker (¾) chalked up convincing wins against Australian Jordan Reece and Poland’s Jakub Pawluk. But a loss to Aussie Keith Swinton in his final Group One round robin match put paid to his hopes of advancing to the next stage.“We knew we had to win all three of our matches to stand any chance of going through to the Repechage,” Walker said.“We won the first two convincingly and the last one we had a little bubble on the start and–didn’t get off the line clean and Swinton did a good job of staying ahead on the track.“We were chomping at his heels the whole way round but couldn’t get by him.”Fraser, the youngest skipper in the fleet, failed to advance from Group Two after finishing the round robin stage with an overall 2.5/4 record. He picked up wins over US Virgin Islands’ Taylor Canfield and England’s Sam Pearson but stumbled against to Kiwi Reuben Corbett yesterday.“It’s a shame we didn’t go through, but we won three races and were really, really close in two other races,” he said.“We feel that we are right there and hopefully we can come back next year and get enough races to at least make the Repechage.”Earlier in the week Fraser pulled off a stunning upset when he beat world number three Torvar Mirsky to give his confidence a much-needed boost.“We had a lot of fun and sailed some good races so it’s been a pretty good week,” he added. In contrast to Walker and Fraser, Gold Cup debutant Miller (0/7) struggled throughout the round robin stage and eventually bowed out after finishing at the bottom of Group Three with no wins to his credit. The Connecticut College student lost to Italy’s Simone Ferrarese, Kiwi Laurie Jury and Canadian Terry McLaughlin in his final three matches yesterday.Miller admitted not taking a single point off his rivals was a bitter pill to swallow.“It was a bit of a bummer not to come away with tangible results,” he lamented. “but I thought it was a great experience and an honour to be here.”
