Cougars are first team through to last four

PHC 1Devonshire Cougars 2Devonshire Cougars coach Dennis Brown hailed his team’s spirit as they advanced to the semi finals of the FA Cup with a win over PHC at Southampton Oval yesterday. An 81st minute goal from substitute Che Brangman was enough to settle the match, after Kevin Lambe’s 29th minute header cancelled out Korvon Tucker’s goal in the 17th minute.“The elements definitely had an impact on the game, I feel the match was physical and intense but I think we were the better team slightly on the day,” said Brown.“Neither side ended up playing attractive football, but at the end of the day the job was about the result and we are moving on.“The match was sloppy and sometimes you have to put your hat on and get on with the match, in a cup competition it isn’t about how you play, it’s about getting a result.”In less than ideal conditions, neither side really came to grips with the pitch, with errant passing and a series of long balls being the main choice of attack for both sides. It was a lapse in concentration at the back that allowed Cougars their opening goal with Domico Coddington playing Tucker through on goal, leaving him the simple task of rounding Troy Hall jr and slotting home from close range. The favour was returned to the hosts when sloppy defending allowed PHC skipper Cecoy Robinson time and space to manufacture a cross from the right flank, putting the ball on Lambe’s head to draw their side level.Cougars defenders were looking at each other querying how the effort went in from 12 yards, with ‘keeper Kioshi Trott claiming he thought it was going wide.Tucker and Coddington both went close for the visitors, while Zebras winger Shakir Smith also had himself a good game, narrowly missing getting his name on the score sheet twice. It was left to super sub Brangman, who has a tendency of rescuing matches for the ‘Big Cats’,Coddington was the chief supplier once again, this time lobbing a cross into the area which the youngster managed to flick over an onrushing Hall from 16 yards.Cofield Robinson made a valiant effort to clear the ball before it reached the net, but could only help the effort into the back of the net.“I told them that we want our name to be in the hat for the next round and it is,” said the Cougars coach.“We don’t really worry about draws, every game is a tough one so it will be about the luck of the draw and who we get is who we get.”PHC: F.
