Carlos gives St. George's hope with late equaliser

A see-saw affair at the west end on Saturday night saw St. George's claw their way from behind to snatch a vital point from bitter rivals Somerset.

St. George's watched an early advantage erased and replaced by a seemingly insurmountable deficit, but they eventually found solace in a late equaliser.

Just as the visitors appeared set for their eighth league loss -- fourth in a row -- coach Greg (Brutus) Foggo found a hero on the bench in Carlos Greaves.

Losing his place in the team after the recent Friendship Trophy loss to Vasco at this same field, the forward entered the match in the 64th minute. He had the greatest impact through a last-gasp goal in the 88th minute which earned a point to ease his side's relegation fears for another week.

However, Somerset would be kicking themselves for being in a position where Greaves' effort was able to make a difference.

Though, not exactly dazzling with their play, Somerset were able to dictate much of the proceedings and keep their opponents on the rack, but defensive blunders on two occasions proved calamitous.

Prior to the second lapse, goals by midfield sparkplug Reggie Tucker and left-winger Clifton Anderson looked to be enough to offset an earlier strike by Sinclair Gibbons of St. George's.

Gibbons bolted the east enders into the lead through a strike in the 27nd minute of play when Somerset goalkeeper Antoine Swan erred badly in his collection of a low cross from deep on the right side near the goal-line.

The 'keeper inexplicably let the ball squeeze under his body and into goal bringing jeers from the small band of followers present to watch an exercise in mediocrity by two `middle-of-the-pack' sides.

Shocked by the turn of events the home side stormed back to level things 10 minutes later when a handball by St. George's full-back Andre Todd resulted in referee Peter Sousa awarding a penalty.

Troy Hall did well to parry Randy Simmons' spot kick against the upright but was perilous to the follow-up by Tucker as the latter slammed in the return.

Striding forward with more confidence Somerset moved further ahead when Steval Arorash spearheaded a quick counter-attack two minutes before the interval attacking up the middle before slipping the ball to Anderson who sent a screaming left-foot drive past the outstretched hands of Hall.

Hall was kept busy in the second half and his many acrobatics were often the only factor keeping St. George's from falling further into arrears.

Then came Greaves' moment to shine and the accompanying sighs of relief.
