Crockwell knock not all in vain
Bermuda Red, 133 for four, beat Bermuda Blue, 130 for nine, by three runs.Fiqre Crockwell’s unbeaten 71 might not have been enough to save his team from losing last night, but it could have booked him a trip to Florida next month.Crockwell carried Bermuda Blue’s batting in the final national team trial match, and his 62-ball innings was one of the few highlights in a game his side eventually lost by just three runs.As a last chance to impress head coach David Moore before he selects his squad for the ICC Americas tournament next month, Crockwell, and Oronde Bascome, who scored 50 for Bermuda Red, shone far brighter than some others. In total there were six dropped catches during the match, most of which were down to lazy fielding more than the difficulty of the chance.Chris Foggo, who kept wicket for Bermuda Blue also fluffed a couple of stumping opportunities, which wasn’t the best thing he could have done given that Dean Minors was playing for the opposition.Minors, who scored an unbeaten 102 for St George’s at the weekend, may get a call up because there is the possibility that personal issues will prevent Moore from picking either Jason Anderson or Foggo.Anderson is unlikely to have made the side in any event as he seems ill-suited to the shortest form of the game. His 21 runs last night, in an opening stand of 74 with Bascome came off 29 balls, and included 12 dot balls.Anderson is far from being alone in failing to score fast enough, and the 133 Bermuda Red posted was still 30 runs short of what Bermuda will need to be scoring if they are to have any chance in the US.That Bermuda Blue failed to chase down the total had much to do with the loss of Lionel Cann from the first ball of the innings and more inept batting after his departure.Crockwell and Stephen Outerbridge (13) aside, no other Blue batsman made it into double figures.Rodney Trott took full advantage of the situation to take four wickets for just 15 runs, and he will certainly be in the final 14.Still, despite Trott’s bowling, Blue might have snatched victory at the death. However, with seven balls remaining and 14 runs needed, Crockwell made his first and only mistake of the night when he ran out Kyle Hodsoll on the final ball of the penultimate over. That left stand-in CeeJay Outerbridge to face Kamau Leverock’s final over, and while Outerbridge finished unbeaten, Hodsoll’s dismissal left Crockwell stranded at the non-striker’s end for two valuable balls.
