‘An evening of heartfelt, dynamic poetry’

Chicago-based poet and educator, Malcolm London

Chicago-based poet Malcolm London has performed at some pretty impressive events across the United States.

Not only has he shared the stage with actor Matt Damon and rapper Lupe Fiasco, while taking part in The People Speak, Live! event. He’s also appeared on the first TED Talk televised programme on PBS, alongside notable celebrities like John Legend, Bill Gates and Geoffrey Canada.

The young talent is now gearing up for his debut performance outside America — as he steps to the mic at Chewstick Lounge tomorrow at 8pm. Mr London, the winner of the 2011 Louder Than A Bomb Poetry Festival, was invited to the Island by the Bermuda Union of Teachers and will be working with its members to conduct writing workshops next week.

He conducts a similar line of work through his role as a teaching artist with Young Chicago Authors, where he visits schools and introduces writer’s works to hundreds of students each year.

Chewstick was honoured to meet Mr London recently while taking part in the Brave New Voices Poetry & Spoken Word Festival in August.

Deidra-Lee Bean, the spokeswoman for the arts education charity, said they were looking forward to welcoming the artist.

“We anticipate an evening of heartfelt, dynamic poetry,” she said. “Opening acts will be Kevina-Lorae and Matthew Johnston, both poets that have come through the ChewSLAM Teen Poetry & Spoken Word Club, and have shared their performing talents locally and abroad. They are honoured to share in on Malcolm’s international debut.

“Do not miss the opportunity to experience a rare performance, international collaboration and the joy of pure expression. Enjoy the vibes, celebrate live entertainment at its best.”

Chewstick Lounge is located on the corner of Elliot Street and Court Street, Hamilton.

Entry fee for the event is $10 with the show kicking off at 8pm and doors opening at 7pm. For more information call 292-2439 (CHEW) or 535-2575; alternatively you can e-mail info@chewstick.org.
