Put your stamp on anniversary celebrations

Stake your place in Bermuda's 400th anniversary celebrations by becoming part of a public art exhibit.

Government is offering people the chance to purchase one of 900 commemorative plaques which will make up a striking piece of artwork at the General Post Office. The plaques will be launched tomorrow by the Bermuda 2009 Steering Committee and will spell out the numbers '400' on the front of the building in Parliament Street.

The cost attached to a piece of Bermuda history? Unmounted plaques are $50 while the cost rises to $90 for those which are mounted.

Conchita Ming, committee chairwoman, said: "It is with great pleasure that we begin the installation of these wonderful commemorative plaques.

"There will be almost 900 plaques installed to spell out '400', all of which will be available for individuals to purchase and take home at the end of the display in January 2010.

"These will make marvellous collectors' items and something to show your grandchildren as you tell them all about the wonderful celebrations held over the year of 2009."

Mrs. Ming said: "We are excited about how this will add another dimension to our celebrations and are very grateful to the Post Office for allowing such a display. It will certainly complement the existing 'Stamp' display already installed, and demonstrates a commitment to ensure that all are aware of this our 400th Anniversary, both locals and visitors alike."

The project was designed and created by s.h.y Architecture with the assistance of summer student Bianca Clay, now a Rotary Exchange student.

The plaques will consist of long-lasting laminated brushed aluminium polymetal and will be embossed with the 400th Anniversary logo 'Celebrating 400 Years'. Application forms will be made available to the public shortly.

Anyone wishing to purchase a commemorative plaque can call the Bermuda 2009 office at 292-8990 or via e-mail at: bermuda2009@gov.bm.
