Bermuda’s most vulnerable were shown some love after an insurance group teamed up with voluntary services to distribute care packages on St Valentine’s Day.

The MoonGate Group handed out 150 “we care packages” stocked with food, hygiene products and face masks last Sunday.

Leon Bascome, the chief executive officer of MoonGate, said that the change in the ages and numbers of homeless people highlighted the “devastating effect” of the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “I observed a difference in composition from the last time we went out – they are getting younger and there is more of a cross-section.”

Mr Bascome added: “There are always mixed emotions of joy and sadness when we give back in this manner – firstly, you never feel that you can do enough.

“Secondly, you encounter people that you know and grew up with. It’s heartbreaking.

“The flip side is the gratitude shared by these recipients and smiles on their faces.

“We are not a conglomerate, but we will continue to do what we can to make a difference.”

MoonGate staff turned to churches and charity organisations for help to target people in need.

Volunteers visited The Anglican Cathedral in Hamilton and distributed 35 packages to people in line for the church’s food programme.

They also delivered 25 care packages to Christ Church in Warwick and 15 to the First Church of God in Pembroke.

The rest were donated to Teen Haven, an organisation that works with young women and their children.

MoonGate increased the number of packages this year by 50 and included more supplies contained in a waterproof tote bag.
