Breaking News: Men in court over Cup Match fracas

Bail was refused this morning for six men allegedly involved in a fight at Cup Match.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded the men despite arguments by defence lawyers Charles Richardson and Lou Peniston that the matter had been given undue prominence because the incident had appeared in this newspaper.Mr. Richardson said: “This event is not serious because The Royal Gazette took notice.”

Bail was refused this morning for six men allegedly involved in a fight at Cup Match.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded the men despite arguments by defence lawyers Charles Richardson and Lou Peniston that the matter had been given undue prominence because the incident had appeared in this newspaper.

Mr. Richardson said: “This event is not serious because The Royal Gazette took notice.”

Mr. Peniston referred to the incident as appearing “on the front page of a rag”.

The alleged fight broke out on the bar and upper veranda of St. George’s Cricket Club at around 8 p.m. on Friday. Up to 5,000 people were in attendance.

The defendants are: Danai Burns, 20, of St. George’s; Chae Foggo, 21, of St. George’s; Wolde Gardner, 29, of St. George’s; Justin Denbrook, 26, of St. George’s; Ronnie Furbert, 19, of St. George’s and Kershon Burt, 21, of Pembroke.

Burt and Gardner are also accused of possession of a glass bottle as a weapon. Furbert is accused of possession of a bar stool.

The men were remanded in custody until August 17.
