AME Church axes Southampton priest

The African Methodist Episcopal Church is axing Reverend Christopher Haynes from his post at the Mount Zion Church in Southampton over unhappiness about his stewardship.

The Royal Gazette understands Rev. Haynes will leave next month but he is refusing to comment about the move while Presiding Elder Reverend Malcolm Eve has refused to return calls.

One church member defended Reverend Haynes, who has used sermons to advice members on investments.

He said some church stalwarts were used to having their own way and could not accept change and so were stirring up problems.

"He doesn't ask for extra money, he's trying to get people to invest in certain things. It's their choice, it's not mandatory. They are doing investments in South Africa."

"I think some people are just looking to create a problem. You find the same thing in clubs, personality clashes come about. I am very sorry all the unnecessary rumours create problems."

Asked if it was the church's role to help people accumulate money the worshipper said it was the norm according to the TV channels he watched.

"I feel this man tells it like it is."

He said Rev. Haynes had also ruffled feathers by challenging church stalwarts who put in worshipping time but weren't growing spiritually.

"He's not frightened to say it. He's a completely religious man, he's not a con artist."

He said the Reverend was providing guidance to people who didn't have a lot of experience in investing money.

"I don't see any problem, the man doesn't handle the money."
