Tourists remained unperturbed yesterday, despite a close call from Hurricane Erin.

And hotels told The Royal Gazette that their guests remained in good spirits despite the abysmal weather.

"We're not worried about it because the locals aren't worried about it. If this was happening back home the media would be going bananas about it," said Carol Beers, of Sylvan Lake, Michigan, who was watching American Football in MR Onions.

Her husband, Mike Beers, said: "On the whole it has been a pleasant experience and this shouldn't affect any plans we have to come here in the future."

He said: "We were concerned about the hurricane but not really nervous. We would have liked to see a bit more of the Island, though. It could have been a real concern but thankfully it wasn't."

Mr. Beers said he was pleased with the level of service he had received at his hotel, Rosedon, during the potential crisis.

Dallas, Texas resident Michael Thomas said: "I didn't know about the hurricane before I came here but it wouldn't have changed my mind anyway.

"I guess we would have gone to the beach, but, on the whole, we have had a good day. Obviously we were thinking about it but it just turned out to be a bit of rain and wind."

Hamilton Princess director of operations Ian Pullan said the hotel picked up extra guests who were stranded but also lost some who left early.

He said: "We have set up a function room for guests with a big screen TV and games.A lot of people want to be in a crowd in these situations.

"We are keeping them updated with constant news being posted on the bulletin board."

"All the guests seem to be in pretty good spirits.

"Obviously, we're pretty relieved that it didn't cause more disruption than it did."

A spokesman for Pink Beach Club said, apart from those due to flight cancellations, there had not been any guests who were put off by the news of the hurricane and decided not to come.

"We had contingency plans in place and we're relieved that there wasn't any damage. The guests have been pretty calm throughout," he said.

Elbow Beach manager Derek Durrant said some guests had had to postpone their stay due to cancelled flights.

But he said, during the day, guests remained calm and "quite happy" and were provided with entertainment and a special buffet in the lobby.
