Inconsistent Sims finishes in 25th place
Michael Sims strung together four sub-par rounds a rarity in his rollercoaster pro career but it was only enough to earn him a 25th place finish at the Nationwide Tour’s Rex Hospitals Open over the weekend. After a stunning first round five-under-par 66 last Thursday, he went on to card three successive rounds of one-under-par 70 on the TPC Wakefield Plantation course in Raleigh, North Carolina.Slowly that dropped him down the leaderboard from fourth, to tenth, to 14th and finally to 25th after an inconsistent final day which saw his scorecard littered with bogeys and birdies and just eight pars.A bogey on the first was followed by two birdies, a double bogey and a birdie at the ninth leaving him at even-par.Three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine secured another round of 70 and a final total of eight-under 276 only six shots behind winner, American Kyle Thompson who recorded a three-under 68 for a 72-hole score of 276.It proved to be a hotly-contested tournament on the par-71, 7,257-yard lay-out, designed by three-time US Open champion Hale Irwin. The lead constantly changed over the four days with Thompson eventually pipping Scott Brown by one shot.Brown had held the lead after 36 holes, moving from 25th to first with an eight-under 63 on Friday.Thompson was rewarded with a first-prize cheque of $99,000.Sims picked up $4,510.Two weeks ago he was rewarded with $8,000 after a 15th place finish at the BMW Pro-Am at the Thornblade Golf Club in South Carolina. After a shaky start to the season with several missed cuts, the 31-year-old Bermudian appears to be finding his form and shrugging off last year’s disappointment when he had to miss much of the season because of illness. This week he will head to Kansas for the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open which will be played at the Crestview Country Club, where $108,000 will go to the winner.A year ago that tournament was won by Johnathan Vegas who then progressed to the PGA Tour, where he won for the first time earlier this year.
