Karim CrearyKarim Creary will be going into his freshman year of college in St. Lawrence University in New York. He is the recipient of the United World College scholarship which fully pays for a two-year study abroad programme. Each year there is only one Bermudian who receives this scholarship. Karim has also been a member of the Bermuda national track and basketball teams and has represented the island at the CARIFTA games and ample basketball camps abroad. Not only does Karim show academic and athletic promise, he also has done various forms of volunteer work. For the past two years he has been studying in Costa Rica where he volunteered at an orphanage, an agape house, and various public schools to spread the values of the United World College movement and assist people in those organisations. Through these experiences he has become proficient in Spanish. He is currently working as an intern at the Bermuda Education Network where he prepares and finalises the logistics for the students’ internship programs. He wishes for the experience to be an avenue through which he can make connections with people who are attempting to improve the education system within the island.Noah McHardyMy name is Noah Aidan Tyrone McHardy. I will turn 16 years old on July 28th and can hardly wait for this milestone birthday. Having said that, I have experienced many other ‘milestones’ along the way that have helped shape me so far.One milestone, for example, is when at the age of nine I became a member of The Learn-a-Lots community television programme, which is a series of episodic ‘documentaries’ that showcase a select group of pre-teens who learn about their local history and heritage.Another milestone in my life was when I became a part of the drum line for Pembroke Hamilton Club (PHC) Majorettes. I played for PHC for two seasons and later joined The Berkeley Institute’s drum line programme. My high point whilst playing for both troupes was when it culminated in performing in Bermuda’s Heritage Day Parades for a number of years in a row.Additionally, I have joined Aikido (Martial Arts class) and sing in my school’s choir — often having solo performances.Although my career choice is not currently etched in stone, I am interested in pursuing a math or science related career. In fact, I was able to get a ‘birdseye’ view of what a math related career would be like when I recently visited BELCO and met with an Electrical Engineer. It was learning from this positive experience that I feel that I may want to pursue structural engineering as a career choice. However, I am excited to explore other possible careers, such as the re/insurance industry, during my time on the Math Springboard Program.Niambi LandyMy name is Niambi Landy and I am 16 years old. I went to Elliot Primary, Whitney Institute Middle School and now attend CedarBridge Academy. I just finished my second year of high school. I am a high achiever in school and have received Principal’s Honors. My two favourite subjects are Mathematics and Science. I think I balance both academics and my other interests very well. Outside of school I do many things. I am part of a track and field team and have participate in the 100 meter and 200 meter events, I played netball for a Saturday league team, taken Mathematics class in the CTY programme and volunteered at my church in the feeding programme. I enjoy staying fit and helping others.Post high school, I want to go away to university, either in Canada or the United Kingdom and study Actuarial Science. I hope to pursue a career in this field because I am an advanced Mathematics student. I feel that if I do something I love, I will never have to go to work a day in my life. I joined the Math Springboard Program to give me the opportunity to shadow people of my career choice. I feel this will help me make the right decision for my future occupation. In order to stay on track, one must live by a motto and my motto consists of ten, two letter words, and they are, “If it is to be, it is up to me”.Kenszo IrisMy name is Kenszo Iris. I am from Hamilton, Bermuda and a student at The Berkeley Institute. I am currently studying the following subjects; Mathematics, English Language, Coordinated Science, Physical Education, Spanish, Citizenship, and Drama. I have been on the Honor Roll for both of my S1 and S2 years and have been actively involved in many theatre performances. My most recent performances are Shakespeare’s, “Macbeth” and “Into the Woods”. I played the role of King Duncan and Mac Duff in Shakespeare’s, Macbeth.I am an active member of the Berkeley Basketball, Volleyball, and Rugby teams, as well as the Bermuda Under 16 Rugby team. Earlier this year, I represented Bermuda in the Under 16 Rugby team at Canada. I have received a Gold medal for shot put at the Inter School sports. In my free time, I like to play table tennis, surf the internet and box.One of my goals is to go to university. I am interested in insurance and performing arts and may want to pursue one or more of these vocations in the future. I am also interested in sports and athletics. I wish to become an Actuary and to also pursue a career in acting as well as a play a sport, such as rugby or track and field. I hope that I do not stop pursuing any of my varied interests in life. I have a great thirst for knowledge and experience and hope to someday reach all my goals.Jazz Elan ShiellMy name is Jazz Élan Shiell and I am 15 years old. I am currently in my second year of high school at the Berkeley Institute. I have had a love of the arts from a very early age.My love for dance began at In Motion School of Dance at the age of three learning Ballet. At the age of four I transitioned to Jackson School of Dance where I stayed until the age of 11 learning Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Hip-Hop. I also danced for two years with the Total Praise Dance Team at Cornerstone Bible Fellowship.I have great love of the arts and in addition to my love of dance I really enjoy playing the violin, which I have been playing now for seven years. I started at the age of six with the Bermuda School of Music learning the Suzuki method. My violin skills have allowed me to play for the Bermuda School of Music both locally and abroad. Additionally, I have acted in school plays, church productions and most recently in the 2011 TROIKA production, ‘MISUNDERSTOOD’.I recently completed my GCSE in dance at the Berkeley Institute where I had to perform a self-choreographed solo and a group choreographed dance. My solo performance as well as my group dance was chosen for my school’s annual dance show and the 2013 Bermuda Annual Exhibition.Clevon CunninghamMy name is Clevon Cunningham, born on June 11th, 1997 to Vilma and Clevon Cunningham. I am 16 years old and an S2 student at Berkeley Institute. I began my education at the Port Royal Primary School, where I was also the Head Boy and received the 2008-2009 Student of Excellence award. Next, I attended the Sandys Secondary Middle School where again I was the Head Boy. While studying there, my high point was my impressive scores on the Math GCSE, which is also my favourite subject.I have achieved many academic awards and have been on the Principal’s list each quarter. Now studying at the Berkeley Institute, I take part in many extra-curricular activities such as playing the viola, which I have been doing for over 7 years now, and participating in the Pathfinders youth group at church. Furthermore, I have participated in the CTY Bermuda programme and will be going away for summer studies. While not busy with schoolwork, I love to listen to music, read books or surf the internet. On weekends, I attend the Southampton Seventh-Day Adventist church. People usually describe me as funny, charming, clever and caring.My dreams and aspirations are to become successful in life, which I define as not only having money, but also having lifelong skills, which make you a well-rounded individual. I plan to obtain a degree in Mathematics, and become an actuary or a mathematics teacher. Hopefully my time in the Math Springboard Program will allow me to make important contacts with professionals in the insurance industry.Brianna PachecoMy name is Brianna Pacheco and I was born in Bermuda on May 23, 1997. I am the daughter of Antonio and Hildeberta Pacheco and the sister to Alex and Ashely Pacheco and even though we fight like cats and dogs, I still love them very much. My family and I are a really happy family of five. I wouldn’t be who I am today if it wasn’t for the support of my family.I started school at the age of five at Elliot Primary. At the age of eleven I went to Whitney Institute. I am now a sophomore at CedarBridge Academy and have been on the honour roll since the eighth grade. My school days offered a lot of interest to me in the mathematical field. I enjoy mathematics and foreign language such as French. It naturally comes easy to me.My hobbies are drawing, solving problems, music and photography. I entered an art competition and won an art award in middle school. In my free time, I hang out with friends or read. In the year of 2015, I will be graduating from CedarBridge Academy and make my way to college in Canada to become an accountant.In five years from now, I would like to enter the finance and insurance industry to pursue my career goals. If I can give any advice to anyone who wants to pursue his or her career goals, it would have to be, always think positive and if you think you can do it, then you will succeed.Husna FarooquiMy name is Husna Farooqui and I am 15 years old. My heritage includes many countries, all within Asia, but to sum it up, I am an Indian Filipina. I was born on July 23, 1997 in Buraidah, Saudi Arabia. I went to Southampton Preschool where my teachers knew me as an adventurer.Later, I attended Clara Mohammed School where I was known as a “know it all” since I always had my hand up. Next, I attended two middle schools: Warwick Academy and Whitney Institute Middle School. Those years have honed me into an avid reader with a great deal of curiosity for life and learning.Currently, I attend CedarBridge Academy. I would describe myself as a shape shifter as my personality and taste is always subject to change. I also have several interests such as art, music (mostly the violin), drama, debate and also scholastic interests. Almost all subjects interest me. Other loves of my life include books, Rock, K-pop, anime and perhaps a game here and there.In the future, I would love to travel and explore the world, which has always been a childhood fantasy of mine. However, as I get closer to graduation, I am thinking about several career options, which can be mind boggling, as many subjects appeal to me. In the future I wish to do several worthwhile things for the world. What those are, is a mystery to me now, but in the meantime, I will continue to enjoy exploring my options.Latisha FrancisMy name is Latisha Francis. I was born on January 4, 1997. I am 16 years old. I attended Port Royal Primary School and Sandys Secondary Middle School. I now study at The Berkeley Institute and will begin S3 in September. I am an honour student at Berkeley. I graduated from Sandys Secondary with honours in 2011, and have been an honour student at Port Royal Primary School as well.In my spare time I enjoy listening to music and playing my piano. I also like to be on my computer. I was in the Port Royal Panthers dance group, which performed at various venues. At the age of three I attended In Motion School of Dance until joining the Port Royal dance group in 2007. I have taken piano lessons for several years, beginning at the age of eight. While attending Port Royal Primary, I was selected to play the violin as a student of the Menuhin Foundation.I would like to become either an actuary, an accountant, or possibly do something in the Business Management field. At the age of 10, I thought I wanted to be an accountant. I then did some further research and decided that I would like to be an actuary instead, because I love math and I am really good at it. I have the intention of attending Bermuda College and then go to a university in the UK, where I hope to someday get a Bachelor’s Degree and then a Master’s Degree. My favourite subjects are math and physics.Denar JohnsonMy name is Denar Johnson. I am a16 years old and am currently studying at The Berkeley Institute. I chose the Math Springboard Program as an opportunity to improve my math skills and to learn some interesting aspects of work life. I hope to get a great job out of this programme, as I have yet to decide on my choice of career. In and out of school I am a good individual, I stay out of trouble and do a good bit of sports.I play football, cricket, rugby and basketball. I have been on the rugby national team for 4 years and on the cricket team for a year. I travelled to Ontario, Canada twice for rugby and once to England for cricket.I really love to play the drums, especially for Gombey Warriors. After I graduate from Berkeley, I will know what I want to do with my life. I want a job that will excite me as well as one that pays me a good salary. I am looking for a career that catches my interest, not something that I will regret within a few days, has nice, kind and exciting people to work with, have people that help one another out. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if the pay wasn’t great, so long as it’s a job that I love.I hope that my time work-shadowing on the Math Springboard Program helps me find a career I can love and a company I would enjoy working at.Marcus HenschkeMy name is Marcus Henschke and I was born in Bermuda on January 1, 1997. I’ve received various awards at all three levels of my education for Math, English, Music, Physical Education and General Proficiency. I’ve maintained an Honor Role status throughout my entire schooling and I have taken and continue to take part in many extracurricular activities such as baseball, cycling, karate, bowling, drum line, singing, CTY (Centre for Talented Youth), & SAM (Sandys’ Math Academy).I am currently attending Berkeley Institute where I have received accumulative honours and have also received letters from Bard College and Brown University asking if I would like to participate in their summer programs. Recently, I received an invitation and acceptance to the Global Young Leaders Conference in my choice of America, China, or Germany, which I hope to go on next summer. I plan to continue on my current path at Berkeley and eventually become a prefect and graduate with Honors or High Honors.After Berkeley, I hope to get accepted into either St. John’s University or The University of Pennsylvania where I can study Actuarial Science or math as I wish to become an actuary some day. I’ve already researched the career and even interviewed one of ACE’s very own actuaries, Mr. Jonathan Macbeth where I asked him various questions about the profession and what he thinks of it. I just hope to return to Bermuda and live a successful life in whatever I do.Kai FrancisMy name is Kai Francis and I was born in Huntsville, Alabama on September 9, 1997. My name “Kai” means ‘lovable’, which I believe matches me perfectly, as I am very popular and loved among my friends.I believe I am a well-rounded student, as I am doing well in school and in my extracurricular activities. Upon entry into High School, I was enrolled in an accelerated Math class, and I continue to do well in that area. Some of my favourite subjects are Design and Technology, Spanish and Family Studies. I am extremely self-motivated and dedicated to the things that are important to me.I have been an avid dancer since the age of 4, and have been involved in the May 24th and Christmas parade for the last eight years. I enjoy playing sports, especially netball. This year I did very well in my school sports day.I also like to volunteer my time for a number of community service activities such as Catlin End-to-End, Salvation Army Dinner Program, Exquisite Styles Fundraising activities, and Purvis Primary School Breast Cancer Awareness Month Events.Someday I would like to be a Pediatrician, but this opportunity to participate in the Math Springboard Program will help me to explore other career options, ones that will allow me to use my Math skills, which I have always excelled at.
