Ex-BHC worker charged in $100,000 con
A former worker of the Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) was brought before Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with conning more than $100,000 out of people.
Dana Edward Martin, 43, of Home Port Drive, Hamilton Parish, faced seven different charges when he appeared before Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves.
Prosecutor Graveney Bannister alleged that on April 1 this year Martin induced Kevin Janzen to invest $25,000 with him after giving a promise or forecast which he knew to be misleading or false.
On April 20 this year, he is alleged to have induced Mr. Janzen to pay him $18,500 by the same means.
That same month, Martin is accused of inducing Rosalind Ray to invest $35,000, $20,000 and $60,000 in him by false or misleading means, in three separate charges.
And Mr. Bannister also alleged yesterday that between March 31 and September 14, 1999, Martin signed a BHC purchase order without lawful authority with intent to defraud.
And between that same period, the Bermudian was accused of fraudulently uttering a false document, namely a BHC purchase order. The charges are indictable and will be dealt with by the Supreme Court, so Martin was not asked to enter a plea to any of the alleged offences yesterday.
He was released on $40,000 bail, with two sureties, on condition that he report to Hamilton Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., and that he surrendered all of his travel documents.
He was represented in court by lawyer Larry Scott and is to reappear before the court on November 15 for mention.
