Ferry cut is bad news March 14, 2000
Harbour Road residents should be given a bus service now that it has been announced that there is no more ferry service to Belmont after 6.30 p.m.
People living in this area pay taxes, (payroll and land -- just increased), they have no bus service and now their only mode of transportation after 6.30 is being taken away effective April 17.
It is extremely dangerous (with no sidewalks, low street lights and bikes that whiz past) to expect locals and tourists in the summer months to walk from Darrell's Wharf as far as Longford Road.
The visitors stay at guest houses in the area because they are less expensive than the larger hotels. These people want to use larger hotels. These people want to use the bus/ferry passes as they don't wish to take taxis which they say are expensive plus tips.
Therefore let's have a public bus service on Harbour Road and we won't worry about the loss of the ferry.
The last ferry from Hamilton to Darrell's Wharf at 9.45 p.m. (summer tourist season) does not encourage these tourists to enjoy any local entertainment which the Tourism Department is trying to re-invent.
Or -- what about staff who are needed to work in Hamilton now the shops are planning to open later? How can we service the tourists if staff can't get home? All major roads should have public transportation until midnight along with facilities for passes/tokens.
SWIMMING HOME Warwick No ride: Cuts in the Belmont ferry schedule will cause problems.
