August 7, 2011Dear Sir,Re. “Unwarranted tone regarding disrespect on the roads”. ‘Happy to swerve you’ thought that my tone regarding poor driving in Bermuda was unwarranted and s/he used fatality rates as a measure of driving skills. It should be noted that fatalities cost society less over the long run than a maiming! Does ‘Swerve’ know the current roster of living Bermudians who have been maimed in traffic accidents, living a handicapped or even paralysed life, having to depend on friends, relatives and Government for everything? Even though Bermuda’s drivers use speeds that are far too high for Bermuda’s driving conditions, generally the speeds are not high enough to produce a fatal outcome unless accident factors line up in exactly the wrong way.Note that a single vehicle accident is simply an accident in which, luckily, an innocent road user was not involved to make it a two vehicle accident. Every time I’m passed in the opposite direction by someone driving in excess of 80kph, which is not that uncommon in Bermuda for cars or bikes, I know that some simple thing like a bit of sand or a dog running into the street could end up in a head-on collision with that idiot. That is why all of us are being disrespected by the speeders and passers on blind turns!STREETWALKER
