Everests, Kelly propel Renegades over Glasgow
Two second-half tries late in the game by Steve Everest and Sean Kelly sealed the victory for an otherwise lethargic Renegades team against the spirited Glasgow University visitors on Saturday at National Sports Club.
The University forwards certainly had the edge in the tight play and were more determined in the rucks and mauls, stealing several balls from the Renegades pack.
The elusive Glasgow centre John Chadwick broke through the Renegades backline with ease, finding Renegades Tom Dixon -- normally a wing -- grasping for air.
Chadwick notched a vital try just before half-time after sidestepping two defenders following a switch pass with outside half Andy MacKenzie.
This score was in reply to eight points for Renegades, courtesy of a Phil Heaney penalty on a well-taken try from wing Timothy McKittrick, playing his first senior game of rugby for Renegades, making the half-time score 8-7 for the home side.
Early in the second half Heaney increased his side's lead to 11-7 with another penalty kick. Glasgow, however, were showing no signs of fatigue and struck back with a brilliant individual try by scrum half Edgar Mayo.
Taking the lead, Glasgow put increased pressure on Renegades resulting in a rare fumble by Everest at the scrum, giving flanker Giles Norbert an easy try near the post giving Glasgow a 19-11 lead.
Everest, however, was the most determined Renegade on the field and seemed to bring his team back to life with a cheeky try in the corner after a well-driven maul. With the score 19-16, Glasgow's earlier dominance was quickly eroding and Kelly snatched victory with another try in the same corner after first-year captain Pat Jones had spun a wide pass.
