Make cuts to Corrections
August 26, 2013Dear Sir,The Sage Commission was formed to find ways that the government can reduce expenditure. One way is to reduce the cost of the Prison System. Currently it costs approx $80,000 per annum to “look after” someone who is incarcerated. Many of our seniors and persons with health issues are struggling, as much needed social assistance programmes have seen their funding reduced. Unemployment is at a record level, as the weakening economy takes its toll. Some cannot meet their financial obligations as they barely can afford to buy the essentials to survive. We have not seen economic growth for about six or so years. The government is borrowing to pay for its workforce, as our deficit is about $300 million. What do we do? We pay taxes to keep our prisoners in what it seems like, luxury! Dental visits paid by us, three square meals a day, I am not sure if they get time with their special loved one, maybe someone can help me with that one. The recidivism rate is abnormally high, suggesting that perhaps repeat offenders love going to “The Westgate Hotel”. Gym facilities provided and TV to watch or even a euchre game, sounds somewhat like a holiday camp. You can even further your studies at our expense, that is a good thing.Surely in these trying economic times, some cuts could be made to the Corrections system. It does not seem right, as many of us struggle, prisoners who are not paying or contributing to the rest of us, should get away scot-free! Thank-you Mr Editor for letting me let off some steam, all the best!CHANGER
