Catlin estimates Japanese quake losses at $200m
Bermuda-based re/insurer Catlin Group Ltd expects losses of around $200 million from last month's Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The company said today that the estimate, which is net of reinsurance and reinstatements, was based on industry losses from the event of between $20 billion and $30 billion.Catlin added that there had been no change to its $175 million estimate of losses from other first-quarter catastrophes – the January flooding in Australia and the February earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. While the company said the losses would have “a significant impact on 2011 earnings”, it added that it has a reinsurance programme in place that would pay a substantial portion of losses above the level of $500 million in gross catastrophe claims for the year. The statement added: “Catlin expresses its sympathy to the Japanese people following the tragedy. The group has made a financial contribution to Save the Children to help the organisation provide aid to young people whose lives have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami.”
