Hornets reaping the rewards of youth policy

Former Dandy Town president Cal Blankendal believes the core philosophies at the club are finally bearing fruit, and looking at recent results no one could disagree with him.The ex-Hornets director of football has seen the club transform from potential title contenders to a firm favourite to win every competition they play in.Hornets lead the Premier Division by five points and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in spectacular fashion, thrashing PHC 6-1 last weekend. And Blankendal believes the club’s motto helps explain the side’s extremely promising season.“Our motto is no guts, no glory, all for one, one for all and that’s how the club is,” said Blankendal, who still attends Hornets’ matches. “Dandy Town is a club with a core philosophy based on attacking play via a possession and physical fitness concept.“This has always been the football foundation of the club and can be seen via ‘Mr Dandy Town’, our coach Jomar Wilkinson.“Jomar has brought back the traditional style of play and vibrant ‘Youth Explosion’ camaraderie between the players, coaches and fans.“The support of Wayne Baxter via his tactical acumen has aided Jomar in his coaching development.“The current team wants to play for the coach, club and broader community.”Leadership is a quality seeping out of Town, with the likes of Damon Ming, Raymond Beach, Kamen Tucker among the more senior players in a squad that has a good blend of youth and experience. In recent years they have developed into a football factory, churning several players to have gone on to bigger and better things.Several of the team’s players have joined the pro ranks in recent times including Bermuda skipper Khano Smith (ex-New England Revolution), Nahki Wells (Bradford City) and Reggie Lambe (Toronto FC).Blankendal reckons the club’s focus on producing young players is a key element to their current success, which he hopes they can sustain for many years to come.“The core of Dandy Town is youth and if we have sufficient numbers, the talent pool will always offer some bright sparks,” he said.“Dandy Town is always expected to win, win in style and win with as many youth players as possible.“With Coach Wilkinson at the helm and the veterans in the team, we can be on a path of continued success.“I may get some flak but North Village are a good model. We can match them in every arena but what we have to do is maintain our rate of success on a more consistent basis.”
