Baxter handed England U21 call-up

Kiara Baxter has been named in England?s Under 21 World Netball Championship squad.

The reality of being chosen to represent England at the upcoming Under -21 World Netball Championships hasn’t quite sunken in for Kiara Baxter. The De Montfort University student remains in a state of shock after being named in England’s national indoor squad that will compete in Australia this summer.“It definitely was an honour and to be honest I think I’m still in shock,” said Baxter, the sister of well-known footballers Khano Smith and Raymond Beach. “I am excited about being chosen to represent England.”Baxter had feared she would be overlooked for selection after injuring her knee (MCL) during last weekend’s final trial.“I was upset I got injured during the last session but the coaches told me whatever display I showed prior to my injury that morning sealed the deal,” she said. “That put a smile on my face.”One of Baxter’s ambitions is to represent England on the world stage and, barring any setbacks, she will now get the chance to do just that.During the upcoming months the 20-year-old athlete intends to strengthen her knee and increase her training to ensure she arrives Down Under on top of her game.“I’m looking forward to developing my skills more in some intense training sessions and games,” she added. “I’m devoted to regaining strength in my knee and playing to my full ability in the near future.”Baxter’s long-time friend and Smooth and Easy Tigers team mate, Venicia Raynor, could also possibly travel Down Under this summer having been chosen as an alternate in England’s Under -21 World Championship squad.Commenting on the progress the duo have made in the UK, Bermuda Netball Association president Tracey Sharrieff said: “I’m so excited, I have blasted e-mails all over the world.“This is great for the inspiration of netball, which is growing so fast throughout the world.”Sharrieff hopes others will be inspired to broaden their own horizons by taking advantage of the opportunities available to them through the advancements Baxter and Raynor have made on the bigger stage.“I want Bermuda girls to know the avenues of opportunity that are available with hard work and commitment,” she added.Meanwhile, Sharrieff said her association will be holding a take out lunch fundraiser February 2 at Young Men’s Social Club.Proceeds are to go towards assisting overseas players such as Baxter as well as covering cost for the Island’s various national teams to compete abroad in the future.“Our fundraising committee is going to be very busy,” Sharrieff said. “We endeavour to do one (take out lunch) every two months as we have big plans and no monies.”
