Local production looks at AIDS
Christians.
The hard-hitting production tells the story of a 16-year-old church member who falls in love with a new convert and gets exposed to the HIV virus.
The play is the latest work from Mrs. Shangri-la Durham-Thompson, director of drama for the Island's AME churches. And she is hoping to bring home a message to believers.
"Christians are not exempted from the disease,'' she said. "It's a disease that doesn't discriminate.
"We have the same experiences as anyone else.'' The play, "Danielle's Choice'', will be performed at St. Paul's AME Centennial Hall, Hamilton, on November 28 and 29.
The 12-strong cast includes Mrs. Carolyn Armstrong, executive director of the AIDS support group STAR, as Danielle's mother.
Danielle is played by Miss Tamara Smith, while Mr. Rodney Trott plays Wendell, the youth she gets involved with.
The show features singing by a choir assembled from churches all over Bermuda.
Mrs. Durham-Thompson, a teacher at Berkeley Institute, said she was hoping for an audience from all denominations.
"We're trying to appeal to all churches for their support, and asking them to come and take part.
"This play should appeal to everybody. It's handled in an interesting manner.
"It's not just a play where you see the plot from the start to the finish. It will be a unique experience.''
