Spurling clan sizzle in semifinals klaw
Junior Match Play Championships reaches its climax today at Ocean View.
Older brother Robbie, 14, has been installed as the favourite over Kent Smith in the championship final after a second consecutive six-and-five triumph.
However, his opponent cannot be taken lightly as Smith yesterday beat the person who beat the defending champion, Steven Carruthers, yesterday.
Smith came back from two down after seven holes to beat Matthew Hocking two-and-one, with the turning point coming on number eight where he sank a 30-foot putt and then chipped into the hole on 10 to move even.
Still, the 15-year-old Smith will need to be at his best to beat Spurling in a clash of two long hitters. Spurling came off the course five-over-par after his six-and-five triumph over Justin Barritt in yesterday's other semifinal.
Today's 36-hole final begins at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Spurling's younger sister Jennifer will play Chris Smith in the second flight final after beating Scott McLeod four-and-three in yesterday's semifinal.
Smith got by Colin Brown five-and-four in the other match.
The first flight final will be between Ian Smith and Ricky Carruthers. Smith defeated Damon Smith four-and-three while Carruthers got by John Legere two-and-one.
