Maybury at centre of new controversy

More ugly scenes involving tennis veteran Sammy Maybury and a member of the Way family unfolded at Coral Beach Club on Monday ? just a day after Maybury had accused tournament organisers of making discriminatory remarks.

The dreadlocked Maybury stunned long-time tournament organiser Marge Way when, in a radio interview, he accused her, among others, of making racial slurs about his hair ? a claim vehemently denied by the 67-year-old administrator.

And on Monday the 72nd BLTC Invitational at Coral Beach came to a controversial close when Maybury became embroiled in a row with Kelly Way ? the daughter of Marge ? following a disputed line call in the Mixed Doubles final.

Way made what turned out to be a tide-changing call that eventually catapulted her and partner Reto Krauer from the brink of defeat ? they were trailing 7-8 and 0-30 on her serve in the final set ? to the title.

In the end, some three days after the rain-interrupted match first started, Way and Krauer defeated Laverne Stowe and Maybury in one of the longest finals in tournament history, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.

But an enthralling match turned sour in the 16th game of the deciding set.

On her serve Way and Krauer were trailing 0-30 when a two-handed, backhand lob by Stowe was perfectly flighted over Krauer's head, taking a sudden high lift when it appeared to bounce just in front of the baseline.

Krauer's athleticism allowed him to get to the ball but he ran out of room. As the gallery applauded the magnificent shot and even more important for Stowe and Maybury, three match points, suddenly there was silence on the court and then an eruption of anger and disbelief when Stowe and Maybury were informed that Way had called the ball out.

There was no official adjudicating the match.

After an open outburst of anger, both Maybury and Stowe vowed not to continue.

But following an exchange of words, Maybury, in a surprise turn, convinced Stowe to carry on even though he said he "knew something like this was going to happen".

Instead of being down 0-40, it was now 15-30. And with new life, and dejected opponents, Way went on to hold serve to level the set at 8-8. She and Krauer then broke Stowe for a 9-8 lead and when Krauer held at love in the 18th game, it was set and match.

After it was all over Way insisted she had called the ball out, but no one on the court had heard her.
