Mansell marches on in Match Play

Taking stock: Zane DeSilva checks his line as he prepares to putt in the Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club. DeSilva defeated Dave Allison one-up yesterday to move into the quarter-finals.

Medallist Nick Mansell eased into the quarter-finals of the men's Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club yesterday and was joined by six other local players.

Mansell got past veteran Eddie Marshall three and two but could face his stiffest challenge so far when he takes on youngster Jarryd Dillas today.

Dillas, one of the Island's most promising players, earned his spot in the quarters with a four and three win over Chris Brough.

Zane DeSilva's impressive run continued as he got past Dave Allison one-up while Blake Marshall made short work of David Hunter, six and five.

Former winner Robert Vallis, meanwhile, remained on course for another title as he beat Richard Neame four and two while Arthur Jones had to go to the 19th hole to see off the challenge of last year's beaten finalist, Boston's Bill Jenks.

Gary Carr progressed courtesy of a three and two win over Quinton Sherlock junior and Cy Kilgore was the sole survivor of ten overseas entrants when he defeated Joe Roberts three and two.

The quarter-finals will be played this morning and the semi-finals this afternoon with the 36-hole final scheduled tomorrow.

In today's ladies championship flight final, former winner and favourite Jennifer Spurling will take on Dolly Winwick.

Spurling edged Stephanie Lewis two-up yesterday while Winwick carved out a two and one victory over Susie Elton.
