Pair get green light to play

Two of the Island's leading cricketers have been given the green light to resume their exploits on the pitch after receiving a stern warning for giving interviews to The Royal Gazette prior to Bermuda's recent participation in the Americas Cup.

When contacted yesterday, BCBC president Reginald Pearman confirmed that Janeiro Tucker and Clay Smith were both reprimanded by a special BCBC disciplinary committee headed by second-vice-president Gary Fray and are now clear to play.

However, the latter may still have a battle on his hands to make the crease as he may require surgery for a nagging knee injury that could keep him on the sidelines.

Pearman also confirmed that Somerset skipper Wendell White has been summoned before the disciplinary committee later this month for an interview he took part in after he returned with the national team from the competition in Argentina.

Meanwhile, the President said the final draft for the 2002 season had yet to be finalised as there remained a few minor details that need to be "ironed out". The deadline for all players seeking transfers expires next Friday, April 19.

Before a single delivery has been bowled this season cricketing rumours are circulating around the island.

With spring in the air, it appears some not so spring-like players will be making comebacks - a fact substantiated by appearance of Gary Brangman suiting up for a training match for St.George's Cricket Club last Saturday.

Also Western Stars' veteran Ricky Brangman, having previously stated that he intended retiring at the St. John's Road club, is back training with his beloved Southampton Rangers along with St.George's' former pacer Kenny Phillips.

Stars' Allan Brangman has made it no secret that he intends to dust off his cricket whites for the new season, while Flatt's opening bowler Kevin Hurdle has decided to play all his sports at St.John's road.

Up in the west-end, former Somerset Cup match skipper Perry Maybury has taken on the coaching duties down at neighbouring Somerset Bridge, while further west Somerset's Craig Brangman has traded places with Willow Cuts' Dwayne Basden.

Down in the east-end, all-time leading Cup Match run-getter Wendell Smith has headed south to join younger sibling and St.David's player-coach Clay.
