A Pembroke man was shot off his bike on North Shore Road during a high-speed chase.The 20-year-old victim yesterday remained in hospital receiving treatment for his injuries, which are not considered life threatening.According to a Police Spokesman, the victim was travelling along The Glebe Road a few minutes after 5pm when two men on a second vehicle gave chase.The pursuit continued onto North Shore Road until a rider on the second vehicle opened fire near the junction with Band Room Lane.The victim was reportedly shot in the leg and fell from his vehicle.The victim was taken to King Edward VII Memorial by ambulance for treatment. Meanwhile police closed North Shore Road between The Glebe Road and Blackwatch Pass.Despite the road being blocked off, one motorist sped past several officers and onto Bandroom Lane, where officers tackled him off his motorcycle.A police spokesman said the man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and taken to Hamilton Police Station to be processed.More than a dozen uniformed officers and forensic officers searched the area for evidence and questioned neighbours.One resident told The Royal Gazette that he had heard what he thought was a motorcycle backfiring. He only later realised that there had been a shooting.Area MP Walter Roban said he was saddened and angered by the incident, saying that he was campaigning only a short distance away.“I was actually in The Glebe Road area visiting people at the time,” Mr Roban said. “I was leaving a building when a woman in the street told me she had heard gunshots. I didn’t hear the shots because I was inside.“I’m concerned that this has happened again to the people in The Glebe Road, St Monica’s Road area. A number of residents have recently been feeling better about what is happening in the area because of the decline of this type of incident.“There was some level of comfort, but having another incident like this taking place brings back all of those negative feelings.”OBA candidate Scott Stewart said he was very disturbed by the incident, and that his prayers are with the victim and his family.“This is the time of the year when we should be enjoying the season of good will towards all men,” he said. “It’s disturbing any time of year, but particularly at this time of the year.“The three main legs of the OBA platform are economy, crime and education, and things like this disturbing event that makes us want to focus even more on the issue of crime.”Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area, particularly anyone who may have seen two men on a motorcycle chasing another motorcyclist in the areas of Glebe Road, North Shore Road and Band Room Lane around 5pm on Saturday.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
