Con artist attempted to reel in Cup Match boaters
An enterprising ? albeit reportedly drunken ? thief kept busy in St. George?s over Cup Match attempting to charge unwary boaters trying to dock at Mullet Bay a fee and stealing at least two watercraft.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told the thief would offer to dock the watercraft for approaching boaters for a fee of $10.
He was successful in docking one boat but one boater said he would not hand over his craft to the thief.
?We got in an argument,? he said. ?The Police got involved but they didn?t do their job. The guy ran off and the Police let him go. I chased him into the trees but he was gone.?
Police Media Relations officer Robin Simmons said he knew nothing of the incident.
?We would encourage anyone who was approached to make an official complaint,? he said.
The resident added the thief was successful in docking one boat by the Dowling?s Gas Station at Penno?s Wharf but he was not sure if the person had paid the man.
?In the end this guy was a drunken idiot,? said the outraged resident who witnessed the incidents. ?We don?t think he got $10 out of anyone.?
But he did proceed to steal a jet-ski from the Wet and Wild concession by the Tavern by the Sea restaurant prompting a water chase as the owner tried to get his personal watercraft back.
?The owner of the concession went chasing him up and down the harbour,? the witness said. ?The Marine Police got involved.?
Marine Police Constable Watson told the thief eventually jumped off the jet-ski and made his escape but the $13,000 vessel was damaged in the incident.
He said the man ? who is known to Police ? also stole a punt during Cup Match and then tried to charge its owner $20 for its return. The owner refused to pay and the punt is missing.
