Lightbourne urging new faces to stake their claim
Strikers Enrique Russell and Jordan Outerbridge have been rewarded for their goalscoring form earlier this season with places in the Bermuda training camp squad next week in Florida which includes two friendly matches against the Bahamas.
Coach Kyle Lightbourne is urging the pair, other fringe players and new inclusions in the squad to seize their opportunities ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.
Bermuda will attend a six-day training camp at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida from Tuesday, with matches against Bahamas on March 5 and 7.
Russell is leading the PHC scoring with eight goals this season while Outerbridge has been equally outstanding for First Division side, Hamilton Parish, where he is the division’s top scorer with eleven goals.
“My message to the new guys is to try to push out some of the older guys,” Lightbourne said of the new faces in the squad which also includes Remy Coddington, Azende Furbert, Reece Jones, Jibri Lawrence-Salaam, Knory Scott, London Steede-Jackson and Trey Tucker.
“That’s only going to make us better if we have new blood coming in and they’re doing well and holding their own.
“Enrique has done well this season, scored goals for PHC, is growing in reputation and his training habits are good,” Lightbourne said of the 20-year-old.
“Jordan had been playing overseas at a higher level than he’s playing at now.
“His work ethic is tremendous and we’re looking forward to working with him. He’s a joy to work with.”
Mark Wade, the BFA president, is pleased to secure the two friendly matches with Bahamas, with games being scarce for the local players in the last two months because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are happy that we could arrange the training camp for the team to enable them to get valuable match minutes,” Wade said.
“The tour also represents an opportunity to fully exercise the enhanced travel protocols required due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The safety of our players and staff has been at the forefront of our planning.
“We are grateful for the support and guidance of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport and the Department of Health who assisted in establishing travel protocols that will be used throughout the World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign.”
