Gamecocks captain confident ahead of BBA play-offs

Mr. Chicken Gamecocks, captained by Cleon Furbert, will be hoping to continue their dominance of the local basketball scene tonight when they take on their closest rivals, Cane Toads, in the winners bracket of the Bermuda Basketball Association play-offs at the Bermuda High School gym.

Throughout the nine games played during the regular season, the Gamecocks were a dominating force, only suffering one defeat.

And although clearly not willing to tempt fate, their captain conceded that they would be going into the clash as clear favourites.

?We are pretty confident after playing well for most of the season and beating Cane Toads twice already,? Furbert said.

?Everybody is fit, and, provided we can shut down their best players, I see no reason why we should not win.?

Cane Toads will by no means be a walkover, however, particularly as they boast the league?s leading points scorer, Alvin Bell, amongst their ranks.

Furbert is convinced that Bell?s performance and the ability of the Gamecocks to disrupt his rhythm will be the key to the fixture.

?Bell and their point guard Charles Peters are their best two players. If we get to them, their team will fall apart,? he predicted.

Earlier in the round-robin stage of the play-offs, the Gamecocks thrashed Bermuda College by 106 points to 60, while Cane Toads benefited from the non-appearance of their opponents, Cellular One Tsunamis, to gain an unopposed passage into tonight?s second round.

Bermuda pro Sullivan Phillips scored 13 points as the Brighton Bears beat the Plymouth Raiders 82-55 in the British Basketball League on Saturday. The Bermudian was the Bears? third highest scorer on the night.
