And senior citizens at the Packwood Home can now be assured of fresh home cooked meals, according to the chef, Ms Louria Fubler.
A graduate of the Bermuda College in general catering, Ms Fubler worked for several impressive restaurants before she started at Packwood Home in mid-May.
Her curriculum vitae includes working at Port Royal Golf Course as a cook and Once Upon a Table as a chef. But the 27-year-old wanted to work on her own initiative -- an opportunity she found at the Packwood Home.
"This is a better experience for me,'' she said, "because I work on my own and I decide what to do.
"I love the way the kitchen is set up,'' she added. "It's spacious, easy to get around and everything in it is new.'' Ms Fubler's work day begins at 7.30 a.m. and ends at 3.30 p.m. In addition to cooking the daily breakfast, lunch and dinner, she bakes various cakes and cookies as well as homemade bread.
"I serve the breakfast and lunch,'' she said. "And I prepare dinner during the day for the nurse aides to warm up at night,'' said Ms Fubler.
The residents typically eat their heaviest meal during the day.
"I cook foods like scalloped potatoes and macaroni for lunch,'' said Ms Fubler. "And the evening meal usually consists of soup and sandwiches.'' Ms Fubler has always been interested in cooking. But in college, she studied both academics and bookkeeping as well as general catering.
"I knew before long, however, that I wanted to cook for a living rather than continue with bookkeeping,'' said Ms Fubler, who likes to be creative and "aims to please''.
She noted: "I was so looking forward to the different atmosphere found at Packwood Home. It is definitely a new experience and I really enjoy it.'' CHEF'S DELIGHT -- An industrial-sized kitchen helps chef, Ms Louise Fubler, cook fresh home-style meals for residents at Packwood Home.
