Heaney's boot boosts 'Gades: RUG
A well-drilled Renegades outfit walked away with the President's Cup on Sunday after a hard fought match in wet conditions against Teachers.
Renegades used the strong kicking of fly-half Phil Heaney and dominant forward play in the loose to keep Teachers on their back foot while they tried to get their passing attack underway.
Heaney also contributed to his side's score with his boot, notching up three penalties, a drop goal and a conversion for a total of 14 points.
Renegades went ahead early, scoring six points as their backs began attacking through a series of well organised plays. Strong tackling from Teachers' defenders managed to hold them at bay initially but continued pressure resulted in Heaney getting a drop goal after a quickly won ball from a ruck.
The Reds finally got on the scoreboard after half-time with fly half Ross Webber kicking a penalty.
Shortly afterwards Teachers put together their best attack of the afternoon with the ball moving successfully between several players before reaching lock Ashley Redmond who dived over the line for the try.
But Renegades' forwards resumed their grip on the game once more and strong loose play in the rucks and mauls forced Teachers back toward their own line.
The culmination of the Blacks' effort came with a try from a well-taken back-row move close to the Teachers line which was joined by visiting centre Bob Massey who crashed through to score.
This was followed by another Heaney penalty which raised the score to 17-8 and then Massey broke from midfield, survived several tackles and fed supporting full-back Neville Ross who scored under the posts. The try was converted by Heaney just before the final whistle.
Police 20 Mariners 15 Police won Sunday's encounter against Mariners thanks to determined forward and half-back play.
Mariners opened up the scoring with a well-taken penalty by their fullback Gavin Corcoran and continued to mount pressure.
However, strong running by Police centre Greg Lunn and the Police forwards helped the Blues take control and drives from Kim White and Gareth Davies set up a Sean Field try.
Almost immediately afterwards Police capitalised on their effort when a Police scrum in midfield saw Gareth Davies break through Mariners' line of defence and pass to centre Russell Matthews who scored in the corner.
Police fly half Alan Oliver found his kicking boots to slot over the conversion taking the score to 12-3 at half-time.
Strong Police forward work early in the second half saw Gareth Davies break free again and feed full-back Jeff Ibbotson who scored.
Mariners managed to put together some good attacking play at this point and their pressure on the Police line was rewarded with a penalty. Prop Paul Reed took it quickly and powered over the line to score, closing the score to 17-8.
Police replied with an Oliver penalty kick but couldn't cross the Greens' line again.
Mariners were rewarded with another penalty that was taken by scrum half Josh McGavern who showed his pace in beating the Police defence.
Corcoran added the conversion taking the final score to 20-15.
Mariners 51 Police 6 In the Vice-President's Cup match, which was the only second team game of the weekend, Mariners defeated Police handily.
Two tries from Paul Reed and Dave Sampson and one apiece from Chris Sylvester, Eddie Arandejelovic, James Sparrow, Richard Atkinson and Peter Vosvenieks -- who added three conversions -- put paid to a Police effort in which Ian Jamieson and Daniel Moore had one penalty apiece.
Mariners appeared content to run the ball from all areas of the pitch and it took a while for the inexperienced Police team to find their feet.
