Ref's `rude gesture' ruling costs Teachers

who went on to lose by just two points to Renegades in first fifteen rugby action at Nationals on Sunday.

The controversial incident occurred in the first half when Robinson, whose solo effort would have resulted in a try, was penalised for ungentlemanly conduct by referee Kim White.

Robinson intercepted a Renegades' pass near his own line and raced the length of the field only to hear the whistle after scoring as referee White ruled that he had made a rude gesture to an opposition player.

As Robinson sped towards the line, he reportedly waved his hand, taunting Renegades players to "catch me if you can''.

White's decision seemed to take the steam out of Teachers' attack as Renegades went into the break with an 8-5 lead following a Heaney penalty and a forward push over try.

Teachers captain Pat Cooper powered over for an unconverted try. But with the second half only a few minutes old, Shane Gill crashed over to increase Renegades' lead and Heaney added the conversion.

Dennis Cherry cut the deficit with a well struck penalty. And with five minutes left Cooper got his second try after bulldozing over the line from 10 yards out but Cherry missed the conversion and Renegades finished up victors 15-13.

Captain Rod Stewart will have been pleased with a performance that leaves his side on top of the Becks League with four wins in as many games.

In the second match, Mariners found their pace and rhythm after a slow start and proceeded to demolish Police 28-8 after trailing 8-7 at the break.

Things looked bright for Mariners in the first few seconds when Simon Van de Weg took a short penalty and ran through the Police forwards untouched to give his side a five point lead. Keith Hodgkins added the conversion.

But for the rest of the half it was all Police with Mariners holding them off the line time and time again with a strong defensive display.

Police broke though once when Alex Mahoney forced his way into the corner. Ian Jamieson added a penalty to give Police a one point lead at the break.

In the second half, Mariners turned to their full back Danny McGavern who returned to the Island last week. He responded by scoring a pair of tries.

Hooker Billy Tempest-Mitchell added another score and Hodgkins kicked three conversions.
