MAWI should be closed

The Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute should be shut down and the site sold off, a commission into Government agency has recommended.

The SAGE Commission said upgrading the Devonshire psychiatric hospital would cost around $40 million — and that the hospital should be transferred to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital site.

The SAGE report said: “Duplicated services are provided at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and at MAWI because the two facilities are operated on two separate sites.

“Substantial savings would be generated from operating both facilities on one site.”

And the report added: “Bermuda Hospitals Board should urgently conduct a review of the costs and savings to be gained from the erection of a new building on the KEMH site adjacent to the new acute care wing that is currently being built.

“Such a building could contain the patients cared for and services offered by MAWI as well as a Continuing Care Unit for the elderly.”

And the SAGE report said: “Bermuda Hospitals Board should consider monetising the old MAWI site as part of the payment for the new building.”
