Memorial Hospital last night after he almost drowned off Darrell's Island.

The man, who was believed to be camping on the island was pulled from the water just after 9 p.m. on Saturday and given resuscitation by other people in the area. He was then taken to Darrell's Wharf to a waiting ambulance that rushed him to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. He was detained overnight.

Yesterday a Police spokesman said the man had since regained consciousness and his condition had improved. While he was being kept under observation last night he is expected to be transferred to a general ward today.

The officer admitted it was not known why the man who was seen standing in the water suddenly slipped below the surface swallowing large amounts of water.

And he could not confirm if the man had been drinking at the time of the incident.

Otherwise, the Cup Match weekend was unusually quiet Police said. Bar a few minor road accidents, officers enjoyed a slack weekend.

And in spite of warnings of a crack down on drunk drivers over the Cup Match holiday, relatively few arrests were made.

Even Saturday night's soca concert that drew 6,000-strong crowds and heavy traffic produced very few incidents.

"It was a well-behaved crowd,'' a Police spokesman said yesterday.
