Recipes from the White House
Authors Linda and Steve Bauer have penned several books, but most recently they published a book on recipes from the White House and Congress. The Texan couple, who have been married for 33 years, visited the Island on the Oceana cruise ship last month.‘Capitol Hill Cooks’ includes a recipe made for every US President from George Washington to Barack Obama. It also includes recipes from members of the US Congress. It took Mrs Bauer more than 20 years to collect all the recipes.“I did the first during the Reagan administration,” she said. Both she and her husband were familiar with the White House Mr Bauer worked there as a military aide and Mrs Bauer was an intern during Watergate.“I really found the food fascinating. So the first half of the book is all the Congress people who sent in their recipes.“The beauty of these books and why they are so popular is not only do they have a wonderful cause for Homes For Our Troops, but these are easy recipes.”Homes for our Troops is a US charity that builds or converts homes for the use of severely disabled servicemen and servicewomen. Proceeds from the book are donated to it.Mrs Bauer continued: “And how fun is it to have Thomas Jefferson’s corn pudding and tuna fricassee? It’s a great way to have your family eat at home and it is something to talk about.”A second cookbook, ‘Recipes from Historic New England’, is the culmination of the couple’s dinners in restaurants in historic buildings in that area.“After we visit them without them knowing, we then call them and say we are doing this book and they just share their recipes,” said Mrs Bauer.Restaurants from Boston include the landmark Parker House hotel and the Bull and Finch Pub, the bar on which the TV show ‘Cheers’ was based. The books are available on Amazon.
