Vandals target Sandys community centre

Somers Isles Lodge graffiti

Graffiti has been sprayed across the doorway of the Somers Isles Lodge in Sandys, just before the facility is to be used by area voters in tomorrow’s by-election.

The quasi-religious motto has been removed, according to Progressive Labour Party candidate Jamahl Simmons.

The building will serve as the polling station in the contest between Mr Simmons and One Bermuda Alliance candidate Georgia Marshall, after the Independent MP Terry Lister’s decision to step down from Sandys South.

Mr Simmons condemned the graffiti as a “desecration” of the community centre, adding: “It is easy in light of the recent incidents of gun violence, and a renewed focus on our troubled youth, to point the fingers at them and in a kneejerk fashion blame them for this act of vandalism. In the current political climate we should be cautious about jumping to conclusions and allow a proper investigation to take its course.”
