Who says girls can’t compete at sports with boys?LeiLanni Nesbeth is one 12-year-old who does. The Saltus Grammar School student was recently chosen for Bermuda’s under-13 boy’s national cricket team and will travel with them to South Africa in February for a world tournament.Prior to that, she was the only girl on the under-11 St David’s cricket team, and helped win the league championship as their captain last season.“It wasn’t hard, because I guess I was the most experienced on the team,” she said. When she’s not playing cricket, LeiLanni plays in various football leagues and is an avid drummer. She started playing football around the age of three. She played for St David’s until last year but is now with local football club Valencia.“Playing for Valencia is more difficult, but I’ve learned more strategies and techniques and I use them to help my game,” she said.LeiLanni also plays for her school’s junior football team — they recently defeated TN Tatem Middle School in a championship match at National Stadium. As a result of that win, she was one of two girls picked for to play in a tournament in Montreal, Canada with her school’s senior girls football team.“We won 2-0 and I scored both goals in that TN Tatem game,” she said.“There were lots of people in the crowd. It didn’t bother me because I was really focused on that game.”LeiLanni was one of 90 athletes to participate in the David Bascome football camp last month — she was one of ten asked to continue with the programme.Ann Williams remembered when her granddaughter first expressed an interest in sport.“We were in the Spot restaurant having lunch one day and she saw football was on the TV, and said ‘I want to do that’,” she said.Ms Williams added: “She’s so humble and always had the drive, and always had to try new things.“When she tries something, she puts her heart and soul into it. She does it to the best of her ability and takes it serious. She leaves drum classes and goes to cricket and plays soccer. She keeps busy.”LeiLanni’s accomplishments have crossed over into the musical realm. She was picked for a scholarship to attend drum school in New York next July having played drums for just over a month. Her advice to other young people who want to become achievers? Just don’t give up and keep trying.
