Swan wins Johnny Walker

with the top prize as the winner of the inaugural Johnnie Walker Black Label Championship Golf tournament held at Ocean View.

The St. George's professional followed a five-under-par 65 on Saturday with an even-par 70 yesterday for a three-day total of 206 and to beat out runner-up Dwayne Pearman (220) by a whopping 16 strokes.

Also finishing on 220 was Keith Smith, who was given third on retrogression, LLoyd James (223) was fifth.

A much closer battle took place among the amateurs as four competitors finished with a net of 139. Retrogression was the deciding factor and Chalmers Talbot was all smiles as he slipped on the coveted yellow jacket. Talbot also received a travel voucher and a bottle of liquor for his exploits.

Occupying the next three places were Chelsa Place, Millard Beach and Noel (Red) Smith while Henry Ascento snatched the gross prize on account of a 146 total.

Top senior -- 55 years and over -- was George Burch (143 net) followed by Claude James (146) and Willard Usher (147). DeVent Smith earned top gross honours for his 154 over the course of the two days.

No-one was able to record a hole-in-one at the designated number three hole, a feat which would have earned a free trip to Jamaica to witness a top PGA tournament, but Canadian professional Mike Kubiseski's came closest after his drive off the tee came to rest just three inches away from the cup.

Tournament committee chairman Ed Ball said that he was quite pleased with how the event went off.

"The players really enjoyed themselves out there,'' said Ball. "They said that they look forward to returning again next year.'' On hand to make presentations were Minister of Youth, Sports and Recreation, Senator Pamela Gordon, and one of Ocean View's founding members, Bill Pitt Sr.

TOP AMATEUR -- CHALMERS TALBOT.
