It's the Vibe!: Why I love Bermuda's new radio station
In the spirit of listening to your customers at least some of them and some of the time this week I will address music. Funnily, some readers think I should just stick to music and leave the social commentary alone. Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion and I can confirm for those persons that they are in the minority of persons who hold that view. However, I will indulge them this week.I was off the rock when Vibe 103 hit the airwaves, but upon my return was greeted to a pleasant surprise! The station rocks and is a breath of fresh air to what became the monotony of the previous radio programming.Don’t panic, I’m not suggesting that the other stations are bad; they’re just older and Vibe 103 is new. People like new. New is good, at least for a while. More on this after the top 20.Up to #1 is Someone Like You by Adele. International Love by Pitbull featuring Chris Brown, improves to #2. Tumbling to #3 is Turn Me On by David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj.Falling to #4 is Rack City by Tyga, one of the hottest rap tracks. Improving to #5 is The Motto by Drake featuring L’il Wayne.Improving to #6 is the hot dance track by Chris Brown and Rihanna, Turn Up The Music. Advancing to #7 is Take Care by Rihanna and Drake. Falling to #8 it’s Hangover by Taio Cruz featuring Flo Rida. Slipping to #9 is Dance (A$$) by Big Sean featuring Nicki Minaj.Still climbing, at #10 is a former essential new tune, Stronger by Kelly Clarkson. Tumbling to #11 is Ni**as in Paris by Jay Z featuring Kanye West. Improving to #12 it’s Give Me All Your Luvin’ by Madonna featuring Nikki Minaj and MIA. Tumbling to #13 is Good Feeling by Flo Rida.Up to #14 is Glad You Came, by The Wanted. At #15 is Starships by Nikki Minaj, last week’s essential new tune. Slipping to #16 is We Found Love by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris.Slipping to #17 is The One That Got Away by Katy Perry. Down to #18 is Hotel Nacional by the Latina diva, Gloria Estefan. Sliding to #19 is Rain Over Me, by Marc Anthony and Pitbull. Down to #20 is Love On Top by Beyonce. Now back to this week’s topic: Welcome to the airwaves Vibe 103 FM. So I’m back on the rock after a week away and upon my return I found the radio station in the car, previously programmed to FM 89, now belts out energy vibes from a new radio station, called Vibe 103.I drove to work that Monday morning bopping my head and intrigued to hear my boy DJ Chubb doing a little more talking than I normally hear from him, as I’ve primarily known him as a nightclub DJ. He has always been a solid DJ, one of the best on the rock, known for consistently dropping hot tunes that make you want to dance. This same work ethic is evident in his performance to date on Vibe 103’s morning drive.Speaking of work ethic, I will digress for a moment and state that I’m sure he: comes to work on time, gives an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay, does what’s expected of him, is thankful to have the job, doesn’t call in sick too often, does his job to the best of his ability all the time, etc, etc. Many workers are finding that companies can no longer sustain their poor work ethic. This is an unfortunate reality and hopefully the mindset and work behaviour of those workers changes drastically. The problem is getting a company to give them a second chance. But back to the music. I drop into my place of work and find that the youngsters have the radio set to Vibe 103. Nice. Occasionally I find that I have to turn up the radio because the station consistently drops energy hits up-tempo tunes that make you want to dance, bop your head, gyrate, dance like nobody’s watching, etc. I’m at the point where I don’t care what other managers or staff think; the song’s hot so the volume must go up!This sequence of events is repeated day in and day out now and I find myself flipping through stations to see which one is playing a song that I like most and that is the station that I will play. I tend to listen to the radio most whilst driving so I do like Power 95 and Mix 106 for the news.I will admit to liking Vibe 103’s link-up with Sky sports which gives us Arsenal fans the horrible news we are likely to receive about our team’s performance in the BPL. I also checked out the websites of all the FM stations to compare and contrast. They’re all a little different with different objectives, so it seems. Being newer and younger, it is no surprise that Vibe 103’s website is a little fresher. What Vibe 103 has done is simply give radio listeners more choices. I like the idea of being able to flip between stations in the hope of finding a song I actually like and desire to hear at that particular time. If I didn’t like what Power 95 was playing I previously only had the options of Hott 107.5 and Mix 106. Now I have four choices. So thanks Collie Buddz for giving us another choice. All this does is force the other radio stations to either step up their game where improvement is needed or to maintain high standards, all in the spirit of competition. Peace ... DJLT.
