Keeping alive the true meaning of Easter
Happy Easter Bermuda! I would be naughty if I didn’t take the opportunity to wish all of you a nice Good Friday and a happy Easter, during the season when we celebrate the life, the crucifixion and Resurrection of our risen Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!I pray that we all keep all of our Good Friday and Easter traditions alive and well. Traditions like kite making, marbles, family gatherings and of course making and eating fish cakes and hot cross buns. More on this after the top 20Holding at the top of the pops is #1 is Turn Me On by David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj, one of the hottest tracks in the world at the moment. Up to #2 is Rack City by Tyga, a former essential new tune. Tumbling to #3 is Ni**as in Paris by Jay Z featuring Kanye West.Improving to #4 it’s Hangover by Taio Cruz featuring Flo Rida. Up to #5 is Dance (A$$) by Big Sean featuring Nicki Minaj.Improving to #6 is Someone Like You by Adele. Adele is easily the best and hottest new artist in the game. Her voice is just beautifully soulful, sultry, raspy and a joy to behold. And she can sing. International Love, by Pitbull featuring Chris Brown, improves to #7. This Pitbull guy has blown up in a big way; I mean he is all over TV, music videos, everybody wants to collaborate with him, people who didn’t really do dance music want to work with him; it’s an interesting ascension into the spotlight. Down to #8 is Good Feeling by Flo Rida, the same song as Levels by Avicii, both large dance tracks with worldwide popularity.Improving to #9 is The Motto by Drake featuring L’il Wayne. Drake is one of the hottest rappers in the business. His voice is smooth, his lyrics are nice and he has ‘game’ or ‘swag’ to drop on top of it all. Tumbling to #10 is We Found Love by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, one of my favourite songs from 2011, still getting it done in the middle of 2012. Falling to #11 is The One That Got Away by Katy Perry. Tumbling to #12 is Hotel Nacional by the Latina diva, Gloria Estefan. Down to #13 is Rain Over Me, by Marc Anthony and Pitbull.Falling to #14 is Love On Top by Beyonce. Up to #15 is a former essential new tune, Stronger, by Kelly Clarkson. Improving to #16 is the hot dance track by former boyfriend/girlfriend duo Chris Brown and Rihanna Turn Up The Music. Improving to #17 is Take Care by Rihanna and Drake. Falling to #18 is Without You by David Guetta featuring Usher. Hangin’ on at #19 is Sexy And I Know It by LMFAO.And now, this week’s essential new track. New at #20 it’s Give Me All Your Luvin’ by Madonna featuring Nikki Minaj and MIA. This one was actually performed at the Super Bowl but it hasn’t really jumped off here like I thought it would have. Now back to this week’s topic Easter. Bermuda has a lot to be proud of but we often are too critical of ourselves and not sufficiently proud of our history, our legacy, our accomplishments, our traditions, our culture and thus ourselves. One of the coolest times of the year in Bermuda has to be the Easter holiday. My wife always says that it’s a tough, long slog in Bermuda between Christmas and Good Friday because we have no public holidays from New Year’s Day until Good Friday! She’s right; it is a long slog. It’s good that Bermuda still honours the Christian tradition of taking it easy over the Easter weekend with most businesses closed on Good Friday and many closed over the entire weekend.Let’s look at kite making. Kite making is really cool and I miss the excitement I had as a young boy, who looked forward to making a kite. I would do an all-nighter; start making a kite on the Thursday night and not finishing until some hour in the morning, like 5am. Then I’d go take a short nap then wake up and polish off some of mom’s hot cross buns and fish cakes. Life was simple back then.I was chatting with a colleague the other day who is a carpenter by profession and I was explaining to him that kite making is a form of carpentry. It deals with wood, precision, measurements the measure twice and cut once concept applies; and a person who is a good kite maker would probably be a good carpenter.Kite making requires patience, attention to detail, a meticulous eye, creativity and the ability to visualise a concept and make it a reality; qualities needed in a good carpenter. So a message to young Bermudian males and females is that by making kites you can be honing your skills to become a top grade carpenter in the future. This gives me the perfect segue into the real reason for the Good Friday and Easter season. Jesus was a carpenter and apparently a pretty good one. I learned some time ago that our kite flying symbolises Christ’s Resurrection and ascension into Heaven. The hot cross buns symbolise the cross on which he suffered, was crucified and died; giving his life so that we could have life, have it more abundantly and have everlasting life. Thank God (excuse the pun) that he did.In any event, whilst we’re flying kites, eating buns and fish cakes, let us remember that the real meaning of Good Friday and Easter is to acknowledge that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ died for our sins on a Good Friday thousands of years ago; but on the third day He rose and ascended into Heaven, to be with God the Father almighty, giving mankind hope and everlasting life.Let’s hope for a safe, happy, peaceful, crime-free Easter holiday weekend and may all families and communities enjoy happy, fulfilling, productive and bonding time. Because when we build strong families; we build a strong community; and when we build strong families and communities; we build a stronger Bermuda! Peace ... DJLT.
