6.8 grams of cannabis earns man $1,000 fineA 39-year-old Pembroke man caught with cannabis was fined $1000 in Magistrates’ Court.Darwin Hewley apologised to the court after admitting possession of the drug. Crown counsel Tawana Tannock said Hewley’s motorcycle was pulled over at the junction of Happy Valley Road with King Street on May 28.Police were stopping motorists in anticipation of violence, the court heard. Hewley appeared nervous and smelled of cannabis, and was searched. A plastic twist in his hand was found to contain 6.8 grams of the drug.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner gave Hewley 30 days to pay the fine.Homeless man charged with theftA 52-year-old homeless man has appeared in Magistrates’ Court, charged with theft.Dana Edward Martin, 52, denied stealing $2,500 in cash from Antonella Fadda, between August 1 and 26.Mr Martin was bailed for $3,000 with one surety by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner. A trial date was set for December 29.Arrest made after reports of an erratic driverA 70-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving yesterday after he was stopped by concerned members of the public.A Police Spokesman said yesterday that at around 1.30am, police received a report of an impaired driver in Southampton near Hightime Drive. When officers arrived on the scene they found that the vehicle has been stopped by another car travelling in the area.“Police were called to the scene and a 70-year-old Southampton man was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving as a result,” the spokesman said. “He subsequently failed the alco-analyser test. The Bermuda Police Service would like to commend the vigilant motorists that reported this incident for their actions.”
