Middleton friends set up `boycott' web page
Bermuda may get a verbal battering on the world wide web over the handling of the Rebecca Middleton murder case, The Royal Gazette can reveal.
And the organisers of web page boycottbermuda.com are hoping thousands will write or e-mail the Attorney General's Chambers demanding a full inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the brutal rape and killing of the 17-year-old Canadian schoolgirl.
One of the organisers of the page, Cathie Fardette -- a cousin of Ms Middleton's mother Cindy -- said feelings in Canada were running high over the murder and its botched aftermath.
She said: "Bermuda is now regarded as a pariah. There is no justice in what happened in Bermuda.
"The general feeling is now among friends, co-workers and family is `don't go there'.'' Ms Fardette, of Orangeville, Ontario, added: "It's not just my web page -- all friends and family are very upset with what has happened in the investigation and the outcome of both Justis Smith's and Kirk Mundy's cases.
"Becky's mother wants an inquiry and we support her completely -- and we hope to get thousands of people to petition the Attorney General in Bermuda to get them to do something.'' She added: "If there is some way we could organise a boycott of Bermuda, we would do that. It doesn't export anything much, but tourism is very big.
Mrs Fardette said: "What we're also encouraging people to do is to put their own articles on the page.'' The homepage said: "This web site will set out to not only show that Canadians, and by extension foreign nationals in general, cannot expect to receive protection from the Bermuda authorities, but that they also cannot expect to receive justice when the protection of the authorities fails.'' The page was set up on Tuesday by friends of the Middleton family -- the day Justis Smith walked free on a murder charge after Supreme Court judge Vincent Meerabux ruled the accused had no case to answer.
It added: "Support for this site, in the form of comments and additions to its content are very welcome.'' The page added: "We expect to post an in-depth site on this ugly travesty within a few days.'' The page includes the address of the Attorney General's Chambers in Hamilton and its e-mail address -- govtlawr yibl.bm The e-mail address of the web page is justice yboycottbermuda.com Rebecca Middleton Graphic file name: BEKKO
