Looby races clear in season finale
rode solo for much of the way to win Bermuda Bicycle Association's final event of the season at South Side, St. David's on Sunday.
Looby finished the 80-minute plus one lap race over a minute ahead of the chasing pack, after breaking away early.
And he was tested in all conditions with the race starting under sunny skies but later hit by high winds and driving rain before finishing in stifling humidity.
Over a tight one-mile loop course, the race got off to a fast start with Looby and junior Jonathon Herring opening up a 30 second gap on the field. Herring, however, found the pace too hot and let Looby go and although Greg Hopkins then took up the chase for four laps, getting within 18 seconds, he too was forced back into the main pack.
With no organised chase materialising, Looby worked tirelessly to extend his lead to over a minute, finishing in one hour 23 minutes and 47 seconds.
In a sprint for second, Damion Wilson pipped Vance Stevens and Hopkins. Wilson was timed in 1:25.29 with Stevens and Hopkins two seconds back.
Jim Butterfield dominated the veterans' division (60 minutes plus one lap), staying with the lead pack throughout and thereby lapping others in his group.
Peter Eccles finished a lap down in second place with the previous week's race winner Joey Richardson placing third, two laps down.
Stevens' performance gave him the Category III title while Tim Miller was the first novice, Herring first in the boys' 15-16, Brian Steinhoff first among 13-14 boys and Cori Bulford first in 11-12 boys.
