electric ovens, save up cooking and baking for the same day; or switch to gas to save money and energy.

Turn your air conditioning off during the day.

2. Control water heating: Put a timer on your water heater so that it is switched off overnight and during working hours.

Get rid off all your small, separate water heaters and invest in a large one.

This will save energy and money.

Insulate all hot water pipes in your home.

Heat washing-up water in the kettle; don't run the tap.

3. Buy reusables -- not disposables: Don't buy disposable pens and razors -- refill cartridges can be bought, saving money in the long-term.

Use cloths instead of paper towels to wipe up spills; and substitute handkerchiefs for tissues. Both can be washed and reused.

Canvas bags can be used for groceries. Alternatively, plastic bags can be reused.

4. Make a compost heap: Vegetable and biodegradable waste can be composted, and put into your garden instead of landfill.

Paper can be composted or used for animal bedding.

5. Shop wisely: Buy products not packaged excessively.

Purchase recyclable or reusable goods.

Bring your own bags shopping -- stores will thank you for saving them money.

6. Separate garbage: Separate glass, aluminium and steel cans from garbage and from paper. Rinse everything (using used dishwater to save water).

7. Lunch: Pack lunches in Tupperware containers which can be washed out and reused, instead of plastic wrappers.

Buy canned drinks, not boxed or bottled ones. Government spends money to recycle bottles, and earns a little recycling cans. Money is needed for environmental publicity and other projects.

8. Eliminate chemicals: Try to use pure soap, instead of detergents.

Instead of aerosol deodorisers, use baking soda.

9. Cut down transportation: Get a little exercise -- ride a bicycle or walk.

Car pool.

Take the bus.

10. Conserve water: Don't run the water while you are brushing your teeth.

In the shower, turn off the water while shampooing your hair.

Flush toilets only when necessary.

Fix pipes so drips and leaks do not occur.
