Duffy claims top ten finish at Worlds

Bermuda triathlete Flora Duffy battled tough conditions for a top ten finish at the women's Under-23 world championships in Budapest, Hungary, yesterday.

The 22-year-old completed a 1.5 kilometre wetsuit swim in the Danube River, a 40-kilometre bike ride on the rain-soaked roads of the Hungarian capital followed by a 10k run in a time of two hours and 14 seconds to finish in eighth position.

She was just over two minutes behind Australian Emma Jackson who posted a winning time of 1.58.07. Runner-up Kirsten Sweetland, of Canada, finished in 1.58.59.

Duffy's latest strong performance seems to suggest she is well on her way to rediscovering her scintillating form of three years ago when she was one of the most promising young triathletes in the world.

At this summer's CAC Games in Puerto Rico, the former Warwick Academy pupil claimed the silver medal in only her third triathlon since failing to finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She followed up that medal win by finishing third in a world class field at the Apple Triathlon in Kelowna, British Columbia, last month.

n This year's Bank Bermuda Foundation Triathlon has been moved from its usual location at Albouy's Point to Clearwater Beach in St. David's.

The change will allow junior triathletes to compete in a full triathlon rather than just a duathlon, as was the case at the previous location.

Bank of Bermuda Foundation and the Bermuda Triathlon Association are hoping for a record number of participants for this year's event, which will he held on Sunday, September 26.

Events will include the Individual Sprint Triathlon and Team Sprint Triathlon for adults, comprising of a 750 metre swim, a 20K cycle and a 5K run. There will also be an Individual Junior and Team Triathlon for younger athletes.

They will be split into two categories: ages 7-10 and 11-14. Juniors aged 7 to 10 will swim 100m, cycle 5K and run 1K, while the 11-14 year olds will swim 200m, cycle 10K and run 2K.

Participants can enter online at www.racedayworld.com and entry forms are also available now at Sportseller in the Washington Mall, Winner's Edge on Front Street, and Bicycle Works on Woodlands Road.
