Bermuda officially welcomed to the Games
A colourful welcome ceremony was held for Team Bermuda on a sunny afternoon at the Village Plaza of the Olympic Village on Tuesday.Chef de Mission Stan Douglas, sports therapist Richard Johnson, Chef d’equipe Paul Pereech, swimmer Roy-Allan Burch, triathlon coach Neil de Ste Croix and long jumper Arantxa King were among those who attended the ceremony where Bermuda was officially welcomed to the Games. The extravagant performance, which lasted for half an hour, saw members of Great Britain’s National Youth Theatre entertain the local contingent with an array of tumbles, cartwheels and bicycle tricks.Douglas, who signed the Wall of Truce in the Olympic Village, said the ceremony had captured the spirit of the Games.“It felt like a very Shakespearean performance from the talented young members of the National Youth Theatre,” he said.“It was very well done; there was music, dancing and even some poetry.”Traditionally, team welcome ceremonies are held prior to the Opening Ceremony with the aim of engaging the athletes in a fun and interactive experience. They extend a formal welcome to the athletes whose team’s national anthem is played while their country’s flag is raised. The Opening Ceremony takes place tomorrow night at the Olympic Stadium.
