Heaney leads 'Gades to easy cup win

Renegades ran roughshod over a weakened Teachers side 38-9 to hoist the Presidents' Cup for the second successive year at National Sports Club yesterday.

Former national team player Phil Heaney led the Renegades assault with 18 points -- a try, three penalties and two conversions.

Prop Danny Forsythe, opened the Blacks' account after 12 minutes. Renegades got the better of a ruck deep in Reds territory on the right side of the field and Forsythe went over from close range.

Teachers' response came 17 minutes later when Andrew Correia made good on a penalty, reducing the score to 5-3.

Correia missed a seemingly easy chance to put his team ahead in the 31st minute when his side were awarded a penalty, but his effort hit the upright.

Heaney, however, added five more points to his side's tally when he faked a pass far on the right and snaked in for a simple score.

Teachers went into the interval 10-6 down and found themselves back peddling five minutes into the second half when Heaney scored his first penalty from 35 yards out.

The Reds, now down 13-6, found themselves reeling in the 57th minute when scrum half Andrew Correia suffered a neck injury as he went into a tackle.

Play was halted for 25 minutes while two doctors and national team physiotherapist Isla Dixon attended Correia who was whisked away by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial hospital.

One of the doctors later told The Royal Gazette that Correia was taken to hospital as a precaution although his injury was not thought to be serious.

After the resumption, Phil Heaney continued his attack with two penalties within seven minutes to place his team 19-6 ahead.

Teachers became unglued in the face of this sustained onslaught and the side -- minus key starters Bobby Hurdle, Ross Webber, Scott Correia, Andre Simons, Ashley Redmond and Heath Robinson -- lost their focus.

Shane Gill and Peter Hughes went over for two converted tries to further extend the Blacks lead to 30-6.

Michael Montgomery kicked a penalty for the Reds to bring their tally to nine points while Mike Gorrie, who came out of retirement to replace an injured Stevie Given at scrum half, pounced on a loose ball after his forwards had earned good position from a scrum three yards out.

In the other First XV game Mariners overcame Police 34-10.

In second team action on Saturday, Teachers won the Vice Presidents' Cup with a 30-10 win over Mariners.
